FG Files Criminal Charges Against Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan
– Akpabio, Yahaya Bello Listed as Witnesses
The Federal Government has formally filed a criminal case against suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, over allegations of defamation targeting Senate President Godswill Akpabio and former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello.
The three-count charge was lodged at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, and is currently before Justice C.N. Oji. The Department of Public Prosecutions filed the suit on behalf of the Attorney-General of the Federation.
According to court documents, the Federal Government alleges that Akpoti-Uduaghan made defamatory statements in violation of Section 391 of the Penal Code and punishable under Section 392. These sections criminalize any imputation likely to harm the reputation of another person, with potential penalties of up to two years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both.
Count One focuses on an April 3, 2025, live interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, in which Akpoti-Uduaghan alleged that Senate President Akpabio, in collusion with Yahaya Bello, plotted to assassinate her. She claimed the withdrawal of her Senate-assigned security detail was part of a deliberate effort to expose her to danger.
The Federal Government argues that her claims were knowingly harmful and intended to damage Akpabio’s reputation.
Count Two pertains to further comments made during the same interview, in which the senator asserted that the alleged assassination plot would take place in Kogi State. She also said she had reported the threat to the Inspector General of Police and notified security agencies. The prosecution contends that these public allegations impugned Bello’s character and raised serious national security concerns.
Count Three involves a phone conversation on March 27, 2025, between Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan and a woman identified as Sandra C. Duru. During the call, the senator allegedly accused Akpabio of involvement in a murder and organ harvesting case. The prosecution describes the statement as malicious, baseless, and capable of inciting public outrage while undermining confidence in the leadership of the National Assembly.
In its summary, the Federal Government asserts that Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan acted with reckless disregard for the truth and malicious intent, using her public platform to spread serious allegations with wide-reaching implications for peace, security, and democratic stability in Nigeria.
