Hardship: We’re All Sitting on a Keg of Gunpowder – Obasanjo Warns

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, and the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, have called for urgent action to eradicate abject poverty across Africa.

Speaking at Dele Momodu’s leadership lecture titled “How to End Hunger and Poverty in Africa,” Obasanjo stressed that Nigeria has no excuse to remain in poverty, noting that if China could lift 700 million people out of poverty, Nigeria should be able to do the same.

In his keynote address, Obasanjo emphasized the importance of security and education in the fight against poverty. “Before we talk about food, security is key,” he said. “Education is one of the most powerful tools to eradicate poverty. Where there is no education, poverty will persist.”

He further noted that effective leadership is essential in addressing poverty. “Leadership is the key ingredient to ending poverty. Every human endeavor thrives on leadership, and we need leaders who embody communal values,” he said. “No child should be left uneducated. With integrity, discipline, and good governance, Nigeria can eliminate hunger and poverty.”

Obasanjo warned that failure to act could lead to dire consequences. “If we don’t take responsibility, we are all sitting on a keg of gunpowder. Until we eradicate poverty in Africa, the international community will not take us seriously.”

The Ooni of Ife echoed Obasanjo’s sentiments, urging Nigerians to embrace patriotism and support local initiatives. “To defeat poverty, we must be patriotic in all aspects – from the food we eat to the clothes we wear. We might not get it right immediately, but with determination, we will become a model for the world,” he said.

Governor Adeleke, in his remarks, praised Dele Momodu for establishing the leadership center in Ibadan. He also highlighted a major issue with current political leadership. “Many political officeholders are too disconnected from the people. The fear of God is lacking in governance,” he said. “I invited President Obasanjo twice to Osun to witness the development projects we’re undertaking. I’m working to build a spaghetti junction modeled after Atlanta’s.”
