PDP to Tinubu: Nation’s Security, Economy Declining Under Your Leadership

…Accuses APC of attempting to suppress opposition

… NEC to review South-East stance on Anyanwu

… PDP governors vow to resist federal pressure

Despite numerous challenges, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) held its 99th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting yesterday, where it raised alarms about the deteriorating security situation and worsening economy under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

In a strongly worded communique issued after the meeting in Abuja, the PDP accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of seeking to silence dissent and transform Nigeria into a one-party state. The NEC also announced that it would address the South-East caucus’s resolution concerning National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu at its next meeting on June 30, 2025.

The meeting, delayed several times due to internal issues, was convened to address urgent matters within the party. The PDP leadership voiced serious concern about the country’s current condition under the APC-led government.

The party’s Acting National Chairman, Ambassador Iliya Damagum, presented the communique, condemning what it described as increasing insecurity, worsening economic conditions, and rampant corruption under the Tinubu administration.

The communique read in part: “NEC is deeply alarmed by the troubling state of the nation under the exploitative and anti-people government of President Tinubu and the APC.” It also accused the APC of using threats and pressure tactics to destabilize opposition parties.

The statement further denounced the government for policy inconsistency, large-scale corruption, budget padding, and embezzlement of public funds, all of which have discouraged investment and contributed to infrastructural decay.

It added: “NEC firmly rejects the APC's apparent agenda to establish a one-party state by undermining opposition parties and democratic institutions through intimidation and political pressure. The PDP reaffirms its unwavering commitment to democracy, rule of law, and the right of Nigerians to participate freely in a multi-party system.”

NEC to Review South-East Resolution on Anyanwu

The meeting also tackled internal matters, such as the approval of committees for the upcoming National Convention, scheduled for August 28–30, 2025. Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa will head the Zoning Committee, while Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa will lead the Convention Committee.

Additionally, the NEC acknowledged a resolution from the South-East PDP regarding the National Secretary position. This resolution will be discussed further in the next NEC session.

The party reassured Nigerians of its continued unity and determination to offer credible leadership and rescue the country from APC’s misgovernance.

Sources said that the Saraki-led Strategy Committee is reviewing the status of Senator Anyanwu as the PDP’s National Secretary. A three-member committee, including Governors Agbu Kefas (Taraba), Peter Mbah (Enugu), and Dauda Lawal (Zamfara), was reportedly sent to consult with INEC. The electoral body confirmed that Anyanwu has not been officially removed and advised the party to follow constitutional procedures.

Meanwhile, the South-East PDP has already passed a vote of no confidence in Anyanwu and nominated Sunday Ude-Okoye as his replacement. The caucus has submitted a petition to NEC, and INEC is expected to observe the proceedings at the next meeting as the process to remove Anyanwu formally begins.

PDP Governors Reject FG Intimidation

Earlier, the PDP Governors’ Forum accused the Federal Government of using coercive tactics and marginalization to weaken the party. Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, who chairs the forum, addressed the NEC meeting, highlighting the various challenges PDP members have faced under the current administration.

He stated: “Despite facing numerous pressures, our members remain committed. We've experienced every form of pressure and attempt at persuasion, yet we remain united and steadfast. While other parties are splintering, the PDP continues to stand strong.”
