2027 VP Slot: I’ll Follow Tinubu’s Lead, Says Barau Jibrin

Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, has pledged unwavering support for President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 elections, stating that he would fully back any decision the President makes — including being selected as running mate.

Speaking during a press briefing on Wednesday in Abuja, Barau responded to growing calls from political groups urging Tinubu to choose him as his vice-presidential candidate.

“Whatever the President asks me to do, I will do — 100 per cent,” Barau said. “He is my political father. If he calls on me to work with him, I’ll simply say, ‘Thank you, sir,’ and I’ll do it.”

However, the Kano-born lawmaker cautioned against premature politicking, emphasizing that the focus should remain on supporting President Tinubu’s efforts to address national challenges.

“President Tinubu is working hard to reposition the country and tackle the problems he inherited. He’s a kind and open-minded leader who stood by me during my trials in Kano. He is the father of the nation, and our priority should be helping him succeed. When he succeeds, we all do,” Barau noted.

He acknowledged the goodwill of groups pushing for him to be vice president but said he had urged them to concentrate on governance instead of early campaign moves.

“When the time for politics comes, we’ll talk. For now, let’s support the President,” he added.

Reaffirming his political alignment, Barau described himself as “a committed progressive” and said loyalty to President Tinubu and the party's ideals remained central to his political journey.

“I am 100 per cent loyal to Mr President,” he stressed.

Barau also used the briefing to shed light on the ongoing work of the Senate Constitution Review Committee. He said zonal public hearings would be held across the six geopolitical zones to consider 59 bills and 31 constitutional amendment proposals.

The hearings will take place in:

  • Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom (South-South) – chaired by Senate President Godswill Akpabio or his representative
  • Kano (North-West) – chaired by Barau Jibrin
  • Lagos (South-West) – chaired by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele
  • Jos (North-Central) – chaired by Deputy Senate Leader Lola Ashiru
  • Maiduguri (North-East) – chaired by Chief Whip Tahir Monguno
  • Enugu (South-East) – chaired by Deputy Chief Whip Peter Nwebonyi

He encouraged Nigerians to participate actively by submitting memoranda to help shape the constitutional review process.
