NLC: Two Years of Tinubu’s Presidency Marked by Suffering, Not Progress

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has condemned President Bola Tinubu’s administration for delivering widespread hardship instead of the promised economic revival. NLC President Joe Ajaero said Tinubu’s reforms—particularly the fuel subsidy removal and naira devaluation—have deepened poverty, inflated living costs, and destroyed real wages, with little to no visible benefit.

Ajaero noted that the government’s policies have triggered mass inflation, job losses, and business closures. Promises of dialogue with labour unions have given way to repression and unfulfilled wage commitments. The only visible intervention—CNG buses—remains grossly inadequate.

He further criticized the worsening insecurity across the country, saying economic debates are meaningless while citizens live in fear. Ajaero described Tinubu’s policies as recycled failures from the past, benefiting elites and foreign interests at the expense of ordinary Nigerians.

Global Workers’ Rights in Decline – ITUC Report

Meanwhile, the 2025 ITUC Global Rights Index shows a sharp global decline in workers’ rights. Only 7 countries now score top marks, with Nigeria newly listed among the 10 worst countries for workers. The report links the decline to decades of deregulation and neoliberal policies, warning that continued erosion of labour rights threatens global democracy and justice.
