Orji Kalu Alleges Political Elites Fueling Boko Haram to Undermine Tinubu
Senator Orji Uzor Kalu (Abia North) has alleged that elements within Nigeria’s political elite are actively supporting Boko Haram in a calculated attempt to destabilize President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Speaking during an appearance on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme aired Monday, Kalu claimed the recent surge in terrorist activities was not coincidental, but part of a deliberate, politically driven campaign.
“The political class is behind Boko Haram. They are using terrorism as a tool to fight Tinubu, just like they did with past administrations,” Kalu asserted.
When pressed to clarify who he referred to as the “political class,” the former Abia State governor pointed to a coalition of politicians, influential business figures, and high-ranking civil servants. He accused them of manipulating the country’s security challenges for personal and political gain.
“Some of them aren’t even after money—they’re after power,” he said. “They want to collapse the system just to take control. That’s not how leadership should be attained.”
Kalu described the resurgence in insecurity as a politically orchestrated move by those dissatisfied with the current government. He argued that the turmoil is being engineered to weaken public confidence and create opportunities for political maneuvering.
“The insecurity in Nigeria is politically induced. These individuals—politicians, businessmen, civil servants—are not just seeking financial benefit. They’re plotting to hijack political power,” he said.
Calling for national unity, Kalu urged Nigerians to rise above divisive politics and focus on the broader goal of national development.
“If we consider ourselves true patriots, we must care about the average Nigerian. We need to come together to build a better country,” he added.
Kalu’s remarks come amid heightened fears following renewed Boko Haram activity in the Northeast. Just a day earlier, nine passengers were reportedly killed by insurgents who detonated improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in Mairari Village, Guzamala Local Government Area of Borno State.
Reacting to the attack, Speaker of the Borno State House of Assembly, Abdulkarim Lawan, condemned the killings as “inhumane,” and called on the military to intensify operations to reclaim Guzamala from insurgent control.
Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, also expressed deep concern over the resurgence of terrorism in the region, urging federal authorities to act swiftly in addressing the growing threat.
