Wike Confirms Reconciliation With Fubara After Presidential Intervention

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has confirmed the resolution of his long-standing political dispute with Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

Speaking to journalists Thursday night after a closed-door meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Wike said the peace deal was facilitated by President Bola Tinubu and had brought an end to months of political tension in Rivers State.

“We have all agreed to work together with the governor, and the governor has also agreed to work with us. We are one political family,” Wike stated.

Describing the development as a final resolution, he added, “Yes, like any group of people, disagreements happen, but we’ve now settled our differences. This is conclusive, and we’ve reported our decision to Mr. President. As far as I’m concerned, the matter is closed.”

Wike urged his supporters and all stakeholders in the state to embrace peace and unity, stressing that “there’s no longer room for acrimony.”

Governor Fubara, who also confirmed the truce, described it as a divine breakthrough and a critical turning point for the state.

“For me, today is a day to thank God. Peace has returned to Rivers State,” Fubara said. “With the help of Mr. President and our leaders, we’ve come to a peaceful resolution.”

He reiterated his commitment to maintaining the unity achieved during the meeting, saying, “We will do everything within our power to sustain this peace.”

The crisis between Wike and Fubara, his political protégé, began soon after Fubara assumed office in May 2023. The rift escalated in October when Wike-aligned lawmakers launched impeachment proceedings against the governor. In retaliation, Fubara demolished the Assembly complex following a mysterious fire, relocating sittings to a temporary venue.

This deepening feud paralyzed governance and prompted presidential intervention. In December 2023, Tinubu brokered a temporary truce, leading to the inclusion of Wike’s loyalists in Fubara’s administration. However, the peace deal eventually collapsed.

By March 2025, President Tinubu declared a state of emergency in the state, suspending Fubara’s executive powers for six months and appointing former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas (retd.), as a sole administrator.

The latest reconciliation, reached during Thursday’s meeting, marks the most decisive attempt to restore lasting political stability in Rivers State.
