2027 Elections: INEC to Begin Nationwide Voter Registration August 18
Makurdi — The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will begin a nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise on August 18, 2025, as part of preparations for the 2027 general elections.
Benue State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Prof. Sam Egwu, made this known in Makurdi, stating that the exercise aligns with constitutional provisions to register Nigerians who turned 18 after the 2023 elections.
According to Prof. Egwu, the CVR will hold across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), beginning with online pre-registration via the INEC website. This will be followed by in-person registration at all INEC Area Offices and designated centres from August 25, 2025, between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., Monday to Friday.
He explained that the exercise would cater to:
- Nigerians who turned 18 after the last election
- Individuals previously unable to register due to absence from the country, incarceration, or disinterest
- Those seeking replacement of damaged or lost cards
- Registrants needing corrections or wishing to transfer their registration within or across states, wards, or polling units
The REC urged Nigerians not to pay or offer bribes for registration, advising early participation to avoid the last-minute rush and associated difficulties of past exercises.
He also assured that provisions have been made for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Benue State, and said the commission would announce a closing date for this phase of registration to allow for data processing.
