Ex-NAFDAC Director Urges Nigerians to Forgive Buhari, Blame the Cabal

As reactions continue to trail the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, a former Director of Public Affairs at the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Dr. Abubakar Jimoh, has called on Nigerians to forgive the late leader, while holding his inner circle accountable for the administration’s shortcomings.

In a press statement, Dr. Abubakar, who currently serves as an Adjunct Senior Research Fellow at the University of Abuja, described Buhari as “a pious, honest, patriotic and nationalistic statesman,” whose noble ambitions for Nigeria were thwarted by a powerful cabal and close aides.

“President Buhari genuinely intended to lift Nigeria out of economic hardship, insecurity, and mass poverty,” he said. “But those he trusted—his kitchen cabinet and certain ministers—betrayed him. They hijacked power and prioritized their personal interests over national progress.”

Dismissing claims that no such cabal existed during Buhari’s presidency, Dr. Abubakar insisted that every government has its share of unelected influencers, which he termed “kitchen cabinet and oligarchic elements.”

To reinforce his point, he recalled a private conversation with former First Lady, Dr. Aisha Buhari, in 2018. “She confided in me her frustrations over the poor performance of several top officials and expressed deep concern over the direction of the administration, despite her husband’s good intentions,” he revealed.

While acknowledging that Buhari, as president, bore ultimate responsibility, Dr. Abubakar argued that history would view him more favorably if Nigerians consider the extent to which his agenda was sabotaged from within. He also issued a warning to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, urging him to be vigilant about those in his inner circle.

“This should serve as a wake-up call to President Tinubu. He must guard against the same pitfalls that undermined Buhari’s administration,” he cautioned.

Dr. Abubakar ended his appeal with a call for national reconciliation, invoking the teachings of forgiveness from both Islam and Christianity.

“The Quran and the Bible both preach forgiveness. In light of the Buhari family’s appeal and the president’s intentions, we must find it in our hearts to forgive and move forward as a nation.”

It will be recalled that former President Muhammadu Buhari passed away earlier this month after a long illness. His death has sparked renewed debate over his legacy, with Nigerians sharply divided over his impact on the country.
