Nigeria’s ICT Sector Grows by 31.63% in Q1 2025
The Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector in Nigeria posted a notable 31.63% year-on-year growth in nominal terms for the first quarter of 2025, according to the latest figures from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). This marks a sharp increase of 28.23 percentage points compared to the 3.40% recorded in Q1 2024, and a 13.67-point rise from Q4 2024, highlighting the sector’s growing economic significance.
In real terms, the ICT sector expanded by 7.40% in Q1 2025, up by 3.36 percentage points from the 4.04% growth seen during the same period last year. However, compared to the previous quarter, the sector shrank by -8.86% in real terms, a decline attributed to seasonal patterns and temporary economic headwinds.
Despite the quarterly dip, the ICT sector’s contribution to real GDP climbed to 10.59% in Q1 2025, up from 10.17% in Q1 2024 and 9.32% in Q4 2024. In nominal GDP terms, it accounted for 10.29% of the total, higher than the 9.25% recorded in Q1 2024 and 8.55% in the previous quarter.
Industry experts credit the sector’s strong performance to the ongoing rollout of broadband infrastructure, especially 4G and 5G networks, a surge in data usage, and broader digital adoption by individuals and enterprises. As Nigeria continues its shift toward a digital economy, ICT remains a vital engine for growth, innovation, employment, and economic diversification.
