Opposition Coalition Picks ADC as 2027 Vehicle, Names David Mark Chair
An alliance of opposition figures has chosen the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its platform for the 2027 general elections, pledging to build an inclusive, values-driven party. The coalition plans to unveil the party and its interim officers at a ceremony in Abuja on Wednesday.
Under the new arrangement, former Senate President David Mark will serve as national chairman, former Osun governor and immediate past interior minister Rauf Aregbesola becomes national secretary, and ex-sports minister Bolaji Abdullahi takes the role of spokesperson.
Several senior People’s Democratic Party (PDP) figures—including former vice-president Atiku Abubakar, Sule Lamido, Tom Ikimi, Aminu Wali, and ex-PDP chair Uche Secondus—urged party members to rally behind the coalition, arguing that both the PDP and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) have failed Nigerians.
After extended overnight talks, the coalition abandoned plans to register a new party—previously floated as the All Democratic Alliance (ADA)—and returned to negotiations with ADC when it became clear the electoral commission might block fresh registration. Those talks succeeded, leading to Tuesday night’s agreement.
Aregbesola initially hesitated before accepting the secretary post, but ultimately agreed, declaring that a political party should be a principled institution, not a tool for personal ambition. He pledged to help build a party grounded in ideology, internal democracy, accountability, and broad inclusion of youths, women, professionals, and other interest groups.
In a communiqué issued by “Concerned Leaders of the PDP” and signed by Mark, the group encouraged patriotic Nigerians to join the coalition, stressing commitments to national unity, security, economic revival, and an uncompromising fight against corruption. They criticised the PDP’s drift since losing the 2023 presidential poll, and condemned what they called APC’s misuse of state power to stifle opposition.
Among the PDP stalwarts at the meeting were former governors Liyel Imoke, Babangida Aliyu, Sam Egwu, Aminu Tambuwal, Gabriel Suswam, and other notable party veterans. The communiqué concluded that APC rule has become “a disaster” and vowed to remove the party in 2027 through the newly adopted ADC platform, to be formally presented in Abuja’s Asokoro district at 2 p.m. Wednesday.
