Outrage Greets Move to Rename UNIMAID After Buhari

A wave of criticism has followed the federal government’s decision to rename the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) as Muhammadu Buhari University, with alumni, students, and concerned citizens urging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to reverse the move.

In a widely circulated open letter, stakeholders acknowledged the contributions of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari but warned that altering the university’s name would erode an identity that has been carefully built over more than four decades.

Describing UNIMAID as “a symbol of resilience, academic excellence, and regional pride,” the petition — led by Opeyemi Olatinwo — recalled the university’s steadfast presence during the height of the Boko Haram insurgency, when it remained operational despite persistent threats.

“UNIMAID is more than just a name — it represents hope, strength, and continuity in the Northeast,” the statement read. Petitioners expressed concerns about the potential loss of the university’s emotional and historical value.

Backed by thousands of signatories, including prominent alumni and current students, the petition argued that the name change does not reflect the views of the university community or the broader public. While showing respect for Buhari’s legacy, the group recommended alternative means of honoring him, such as renaming the Federal University of Transportation in his hometown, Daura, or the Nigerian Army University in Biu — institutions they say better align with his military background and leadership style.

“This is not a political protest,” the petition emphasized. “It is a sincere call to preserve a name that has stood firm through conflict and helped shape generations of leaders.”

As of Friday, the petition had gathered over 1,500 additional signatures, gaining traction across social media platforms. Many signatories stressed the need for inclusive consultations when decisions of such national and cultural weight are made.

Supporters of the current name expressed confidence that President Tinubu would act with fairness and sensitivity, ensuring that UNIMAID’s legacy is preserved while finding an appropriate way to honor Buhari’s contributions.
