Chimamanda: Obi Wants to Lead Because He Truly Cares About Nigeria

Renowned author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has reiterated her support for Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, emphasizing that her endorsement is driven by her deep concern for Nigeria’s future.

In an interview on Channels Television’s Amazing Africans, Adichie praised Obi for being different from typical Nigerian politicians. She said his motivation isn’t personal gain or power, but a genuine commitment to national progress.

“Peter Obi doesn’t need to be president—he wants to be because he cares about Nigeria,” Adichie stated. “That’s a crucial difference. Some people chase the presidency out of ego, not out of any real desire to serve.”

She described her support for Obi as a matter of principle and patriotism, adding, “My backing for Peter Obi comes from my love for Nigeria. I believe good leadership can transform this country.”

Adichie highlighted Obi’s humility, integrity, and sense of duty, saying he sees leadership as a responsibility, not a privilege.

“He doesn’t expect gratitude for doing his job. To him, serving the people is what leadership is about,” she noted. “He carries a strong sense of accountability and doesn’t approach leadership with arrogance.”

Reflecting on her personal relationship with the former Anambra State governor, Adichie said Obi has remained consistent in values and character over the years.

“He’s the same person I knew 15 years ago—genuine, consistent, curious. Those are qualities I admire in any leader,” she said.

On Obi’s recent promise to serve only one term if elected in 2027, Adichie chose not to comment on future political scenarios.

“I don’t want to speculate or talk about what I’ll feel if he doesn’t become the candidate. It’s too early to say,” she remarked.

Adichie was one of Obi’s most vocal supporters during the 2023 election season. Her endorsement—including a heartfelt 2022 birthday tribute calling him “my big bro”—went viral and sparked widespread conversation online.
