Gen. Ijioma Cautions Peter Obi Against Rejoining PDP, Warns of Political Trap

Retired Major General Ijioma Nwokoro Ijioma has advised Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, to reject any move aimed at luring him back into the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Speaking during the July edition of the Ikengaonline town hall meeting on Thursday night, Ijioma cautioned that Obi’s political future is not secure within the PDP in its current state.

He warned Obi not to trust a party that elevates the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, whose allegiance to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is well-known. Describing the PDP as a “carcass,” Ijioma said only “vultures” feed on such, implying the party is politically decayed and unreliable.

On the topic “Ndigbo and the 2027 Politics”, the retired general expressed suspicion over ongoing efforts to woo Obi back to the PDP, calling it a trap designed to derail his presidential ambition. He also urged Obi to tread cautiously in his relationship with the ADC coalition, advising him to withdraw if there's no clear path to securing their presidential ticket.

Ijioma insisted that Obi remains the most nationally accepted presidential hopeful and predicted he would win in 2027 regardless of his party platform. According to him, the Nigerian masses — weary of the APC’s poor governance and economic hardship — are ready to support Obi wherever he goes.

“If I were advising Peter Obi, I’d strongly warn him against returning to PDP, especially with Wike still influential there. The party can’t be trusted to protect his interests,” he said. “And concerning the ADC, if he's unsure of clinching the ticket, he should leave. Any party Peter Obi joins will immediately become the political base for Nigeria’s suffering masses.”

He stressed that Obi’s appeal lies in his perceived integrity and commitment to fixing the country, noting that only the political elite — especially within the Igbo class — oppose him out of selfish motives.

Ijioma echoed former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s call for Nigeria to give the Southeast a chance, noting that while the country has had Hausa, Fulani, Yoruba, and minority presidents, it has yet to produce a truly Nigerian leader of Igbo descent.

He concluded by calling on Nigerians, especially the Igbo at home and abroad, to unite behind Peter Obi as the only credible alternative to lead Nigeria out of its current crisis.
