"I’m Not Desperate for Power" — Peter Obi Defends One-Term Pledge

Presidential aspirant Peter Obi has reaffirmed his commitment to serving only one term if elected in 2027, dismissing criticism that labels the promise as desperate or unrealistic.

In a statement shared via X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, the former Anambra State governor said the one-term vow reflects his desire to rebuild Nigeria—not a quest for personal power.

“It baffles me that my decision to serve for only four years, if elected, is stirring such agitation. Are we doubting that genuine transformation can happen in 48 months?” Obi questioned.

Responding to claims that the pledge reflects desperation, Obi firmly rejected the idea.

“I’ve never been desperate for power—or anything else. Desperation is often marked by aggressive rhetoric, unrealistic promises, personal attacks, or constantly shifting positions. None of these describe me,” he said.

He stressed that his political record has been grounded in integrity and principle, not desperation or political maneuvering.

“I’ve never been linked to thuggery, ballot snatching, or electoral malpractice. Let anyone investigate—my record is clean,” Obi added.

He maintained that four years is enough to initiate impactful reforms, citing the potential to fight corruption, reallocate wasteful government spending, and uphold the rule of law.

“Trillions spent on luxury—like new presidential jets—could have gone to education, healthcare, or infrastructure. In four years, we can reset priorities,” he said.

He also pledged to safeguard democratic values:

“Within that time, we can guarantee the rule of law and deliver free, fair, and credible elections.”

Obi concluded by emphasizing that for him, leadership is about service and results—not entitlement.

As 2027 approaches, his one-term promise continues to stir debate, winning both praise and skepticism across political lines.
