Saint Lucian Prime Minister defends Tinubu’s visit, calls backlash “shameful and disgraceful"

Saint Lucian Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre has staunchly defended President Bola Tinubu’s recent visit to the country, calling the criticism against it “shameful and disgraceful.” During his 2025 Emancipation Day speech in Castries, Pierre denounced the backlash as politically driven and rooted in lingering colonial-era self-hate.

He accused opposition-aligned critics of targeting Tinubu unfairly, arguing that such hostility reveals the psychological damage of slavery and a tendency to see African leaders as inferior. “The attack on Nigeria’s President, Bola Tinubu, by a politically motivated group—quietly backed by the opposition—shows the lasting effects of slavery: internalized self-hate and a willingness to demean fellow Africans,” he said.

Pierre emphasized that if the visiting leader had come from a Western country, the reception would have been far more respectful.

Highlighting the importance of Tinubu’s visit, he said it was an honour for Saint Lucia and a step toward stronger ties between Nigeria, Saint Lucia, and the broader OECS region. He announced that several MOUs were signed during the visit, covering areas like education, culture, economic cooperation, and social development.

“My government is committed to turning these agreements into tangible outcomes as soon as possible,” Pierre added, reaffirming his support for Pan-African unity and collaboration among people of African heritage.
